I’ll have to try this, normally I’m hand mulching to prevent lumps
Hope it works well for you. It has for me for 20+years. Thx for commenting. Coach.
Thank you, this video was very helpful, I think I was over watering mine!
Darn near a desert plant in the dry summers. Good luck. Thx for commenting.
Big Country would love this video! 🤞😊
I didn't realize it got so big! Is this the prunus virginiana variety?
Yes it is. Thx for watching.
@@YardCoach cool - thanks for confirming!
Help mine are dying. What plant food? How do I prune?
These are susceptible to root rot from too much water. They like drying a little before next watering. Feed about every 6 weeks with low dose organic plant food. Look close for spider mite as well. Under side of the leaves.
Definitely would have been more than $3000 for me! And would have taken at least 6 months or more for me to finish! Seriously! That's a very nice and pro transformation, lots of sweaty work too! I speak from experience😊.
Labor of love is stretching the truth a bit, but we grrrd through it. Thanks for commenting. Coach.

This plant is not blooming. It is about 3 feet tall. It is healthy. What fertilizer should I be using? Thanks.
Depending on where you are located it has a bloom period from mid Spring all the way through til Fall. Have you sheared or pruned it this year causing a delay in first year blooming growth. It generally is not dependent on fertilizer for a blooming period. Send me a pic of the plant to our email and let me see it. Also, is it in a full sun location and not a shady location? Let me know. Coach.
A new subscriber here. I only watched 2 of your videos so far but planning to watch more to learn. I'm in zone 7a (CT) and it can get cold in the winter but with the global warming, last couple of winters have been milder. Recently, we pulled out all the overgrown shrubs and trees that previous owner didn't take care of for many years. Due the the shades they created, the ground is either bare in some areas or filled with weeds instead of grass. Now, having the whole side of the house as a empty lot, we need to think about the landscaping design. I like the idea of planting ground covers instead of grass. It has eastern/northern facing with more than 4 hours of sun I think (One side of the lot is sunnier longer than the other side.) What kind of low- maintenance ground cover would you recommend? We will put a stone path to connect the front yard to the back and I want ground covers that are nicely spread in between the stones like some of photos you showed in the video. Sorry for a long message and thank you!
Hey Jen, thanks for watching. Good question. For paver fill in planting in your area you might look into selections like creeping thyme, Veronica, carpet bugle, Isotoma and the like. Check those out or drop by a local reputable nursery and see what other selections they might offer. Good luck. Here as needed for ya. Coach.
OMG that will totally help me at work! Thanks so much!
ledged experts say 8-12 ft - 10-15 , 15-20, 20-30 ft high GEEEZZZ guys which is it LOL I'm guessing the guy standing next to a 20-30 foot one knows it can grow 30 ft LOL I've heard 10-15 ft WIDE and 25 ft WIDE LOL
Are soaker hoses effective on big trees?
Yes they are a or near the drip line of the tree and let it run for many hours even overnight and more. Depending on the tree size, variety and water needs. If the tree is naturally accustomed t9 being dry certain times of the year, be careful. Read up and make certain you ar not harming by over watering when the tree is accustomed to being dry.
@@YardCoach it’s a live oak with a drip line greater than 100 ft in circumference. I live in south Texas with lots of rock and clay. The tree has suffered minor heat stress in the past but this summer has been cooler than former years. If this info helps I’d appreciate what you have to recommend. Also does the soaker hose use a lot of water, as my area is under water restrictions down to once per week. Is it still ok to run over night?
@henward7866 check the specs on the hose for gph rating. With a tree of that size, age and endurance, you shouldn’t have to deep water more than once a month. Test one overnight watering and check for water depth penetration, then adjust watering time accordingly. Pre water deeply before heat waves and not during. The tree will thank you.
I’m going to try it tonight on my tomato plants to stop fungus. Late blight has started. I’ll let you know.
Ok? I have never used this product for fungus. Let me know.
I had to cut the 6 red wires running through my yard to reroute them a different direction. Is there a way to figure out which wire which goes with which? I don’t label them and I don’t have access to the start and finish of each wire.
Thanks for the question. My first response is Uh Oh. but in thinking more about it there is a solution. It may be easier to re connect all your red wires, then, test them using the timer, then re arrange the wires at the timer to conform the way you want them. In other words, zone 4 right now is blah blah blah, but re connecting it now runs a different part of the yard. Write it down zone by zone, then go back and make zone 4 what it used to be. Or live with the new configurations. This is the problem with just 1 color systems. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
Question. What tree will go good with blueberries?
Something small, and acid loving. Small evergreens, Maples, and the like. Not too big to cause a shade shadow. Thx for watching. Coach.
@@YardCoach thank you.
Go french 💯👍
I’ve always just thought the side yard was for excess storage, and I hate it. You gave me plenty of ideas to spruce it up now
Glad it helped for you.

What do I do if we already poured the gravel over dirt and people now spin the tires?
Teaching moment on slow acceleration, 4wd, or re pack what you have with a roller and build it again. What is the native soil like for you? If rock will not pack you might go get grid fabric.
9:58 “365 degrees???” Hmm, So you want just a little bit beyond full circle rotation?
5 degrees beyond perfect..👍🏻
This was sold as a house plant at The store for me (think in late winter) Had never seen it and thought it was interesting - I forgot to water it and thought it was a live still due to its color until I realized all the little needles and blooms just fell off 😂

I didn't catch the part where you mentioned perimeter sprinkler spacing. I heard you say 15ft spray distance but how close where the sprinklers to one another? Thanks
A good rule of thumb is always be 3 under in your spacing. For instance 15’ spray heads are spaced 12’. For overlapping head to head coverage.
@@YardCoach wow that was a fast response. Thank you
How difficult is it to prune to keep it 10 feet wide? Once a year? Twice? More? I have an American holly that is super easy because it's a slow grower. I want to plant a screen of Nellies, but my back yard is narrow - 25 feet of grass and 10 feet of patio = 35 feet total width.
So are you taking grass out? As far as your question yes you can prune and occasionally shear them to maintain size and shape. However, Nellies can get straggly if you prune too much. Thx for your Q and watching the channel.
@@YardCoachThanks for getting back to me. I guess I'll plant 5 gallon Nellies, and remove enough grass for that. I expect the plants to grow over the grass as they get bigger. Ideally, I'd like to keep the Nellies at 10 feet wide. Do you think it's possible to do this, or will it be too hard to keep at that 10 foot width? Subscribed!
You can keep them at that width. They will serve you well for many years. Thx for the sub.
Thank you very much

I read elsewhere that this species is non-invasive: Some varieties of pennisetums will readily self-seed and become invasive in the warmer areas where they are grown as perennials. However, according to Missouri Botanical Garden, “‘Rubrum’, sometimes commonly called purple or red fountain grass, is a burgundy-red leaved cultivar that is not invasive under any circumstances because, unlike the species, it rarely sets seed.” However, be careful if you grow several cultivars together because with cross-pollination, you might get viable seed.
Thanks so much for all the information you have provided. It was very informative.
You are welcome. Here to help as needed. Thx for watching.
if you need mulch use a mulch calculator. measure your area and never buy to much. seen one guy buy a truck load with out measuring and he bought probably 10x what he actually needed. to get rid of mulch is pretty expensive even though they burn it.
Thanks, Coach, I appreciate your information and your style! My hillside is a 5' tall 3:1 berm that runs about 250' across my backyard that builders piled up there in 1990. it is populated with tumbleweeds, pigweed, etc. that I have to pull several times a year (which is aggravating because that disturbs the hill). My hillside isn't eroding from rainfall as much as from blowing wind in this zone 7 high desert location (and my weeding). I'm planning on using various sizes of ornamental grasses (5' tall and less) to boost privacy, a few shrubs & perennials, and snaking throughout will be honeysuckle and star jasmine vines as 'stand-ins' for ground cover because I'm on a well system and have just 2 irrigation circuits available, which can only water 12 plants per 200sq.ft. using drip irrigation (couldn't get full coverage with sprinklers). I think I have a layout that looks good (on paper), but I'm going back and forth on whether I should use mulch overall or just around the root zones. And I go back and forth between shredded wood or 1" gravel as mulch. The 'soil' is dry, dry sand (Normally, we get about 9" of rain a year, but we haven't seen that in several years now). I may try both mulches and see how it goes, and I'll just plant a small section to see how the plants fare before taking on the whole berm. I am struck by the thought that water is everything. Too much and we get erosion. Too little and we get erosion. And the solution? It takes water. Thanks again. I'm off to watch your video about prepping the soil for planting.
Hello, this sounds, as you write it, as a difficult project. Might I suggest a few pics of the area sent to my email so I can have a better idea and visual of what you have to face. There are solutions for you. Let me know. Email is in every episode. Regards, Coach Matt.

I pay someone to mow and feel so bad for them....I skipped mowing last week and plan to skip this week too. Hate to mess with their income, but I have more brown than green right now and the green isn't growing.
@kristywhited8857 totally understand. We barely made it through our dry spell until yesterday. 1.5 in of rain watered everything well and set the brooks a flowin again. Remember not to cut it super short when you resume mowing again. Third, third etc. thx for the comment. Coach.

Great fall color, but not a native. It’s an invasive species from Asia with almost no wildlife value in North America.
A lot of plants are not native to US. Not all ornamentals have wildlife value. Keep up with maintenance and it will stay put.
Thank you for your info but would you please also say type of soil and when to fertilize?
Thx for watching. Sandy loam is best, but amended clay or imported soils it will do fine. Fertilize early Spring and early Fall, as needed.. Dry organic acid loving and water in well.
Planted too deep? “Find the flare”
Please advise, regarding catching fire foamy bells, might they be as hardy as the eye spy? Also, what is the benefit to cut the blooms, if any?
They would be as hardy, possibly more so. Zones 4-9. The bloom time is a long one as the plant is sterile. Only benefit would be to add vigor back into leaf growth on a younger establishing plant. Thx for watching n the Q. Coach.
❤@@YardCoach
@KC-cy9dd thx for watching..
I just got one of these. It looks amazing. It's got more blue and we'll, lace than my typical other Russian sage.
I was never into coral bells; thought they were “grandma plants” 😂 but I have a couple of corral bells (like this one) that have lighter variation with pink blooms! I love them. I never grew up with the traditional plants people grew up with but more of a tropical, container gardening my grandma tasked me with watering 😂 I’ve definitely purchased classic plants now!
Yes Indeed! Thank all the plant hybridizeres out there making beautiful new creations for us. Thx MariMari.
